April 2012
The last Thursday, John 8:12 was the suggested scripture from the book I was reading.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Like all good scriptures, it caused me to think about light and Jesus. I had a God moment.
Many places in scripture refer to Jesus as the light of the world. Palm Sunday was approaching and I had not completely settled on the whole service. Light, Palms , Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday. The themes of these days rattled around in my mind.
It was during this contemplative time that the idea to associate readings and light/candles came together.
So, on Palm Sunday we had eight (8) candles associated with the bible readings. As each reading was completed, one (1) candle was extinguished – as Jesus moved toward his final day. As Good Friday began, five (5) candles were still light, but by the end of the service all had been extinguished.
On Good Friday, we remember the sacrifice that Christ made for us, so that our sins are forgiven BUT the story does not end on that sad note.
On Easter Sunday we were greeted with the news, the glorious news that Christ had risen from the tomb – Hallelujah!
